How Often Should You Really Get Your Hair Cut?

At Fred & Ginger Hair and Beauty, one of the most common questions we get asked is:

“How often should I get my hair cut?”

The answer? It depends—on your hair type, style, and your personal hair goals. But here’s a breakdown to help you understand what’s best for your locks.

1. Short Hair / Precision Cuts: Every 4-6 Weeks

Short styles like pixie cuts or sharp bobs need regular maintenance to keep their shape.

To keep it looking fresh and structured, book in every 4–6 weeks.

2. Medium to Long Hair: Every 8-12 Weeks

If your hair is in good condition and you’re happy with the length, a trim every 2–3 months helps prevent split ends and keeps it looking healthy.

Long hair can often mask damage, but that doesn’t mean it’s not there—regular trims are essential.

3. Growing It Out? Still Trim It

Trying to grow your hair? It may sound backwards, but regular trims actually help.

Removing dry, split ends prevents further breakage and lets your hair grow stronger and healthier. Aim for a trim every 10–12 weeks.

4. Coloured or Heat-Styled Hair: Every 6-8 Weeks

If your hair is regularly coloured, bleached, or exposed to heat tools, it’s more prone to damage.

Book in every 6–8 weeks to keep ends tidy and the condition strong. Don’t forget treatments like Olaplex or Epres to keep your hair protected!

5. Curly or Textured Hair: Every 8-12 Weeks

Curly hair doesn’t show growth the same way straight hair does, but it still needs maintenance.

Regular shaping every 8–12 weeks helps with definition and overall health.
